“If many little people, in many little places, do many little things, they can change the face of the Earth.” ~ African Proverb
Involving your kids in service from a young age will help them develop a heart for it and confidence in their ability to be change-makers in this world. The beautiful lesson as illustrated in the quote is that this doesn’t have to involve a grand activity or become a huge undertaking. April is National Volunteer Month and the perfect time to plant the seed with your little ones. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- 10 ways to volunteer at home with your children: From making and donating care packages to passing on cheer, this list provides a variety of activities that easily start under your roof.
- Engage your kids in Earth Day: Although younger children can’t fully understand all the complexities of things like climate change and pollution, they care a lot about the well-being of animals and the natural spaces they value. Seeds of Caring is offering a kid-focused Earth Day event on Saturday, April 13. If that date doesn't work or it doesn't sound like the right fit for your family, check out Earth Day Columbus for other opportunities.
- Start with Seeds of Caring: If your kids don’t know what cause they are passionate about yet, this organization will introduce them to a range of service, social action, and community building events. With 100+ planned events this year geared toward kids ages 2-12, you’re sure to find something that resonates with your family. New events are posted on the 1st and 15th of each month, and I recommend registering early -- spots fill up quickly!
I’ve personally found Seeds of Caring so fulfilling for me and my family, but I loved how another parent participant, Molly – mom of a 7 and 10-year-old, put into words the impact it has had on them:
“Like many families, our lives are incredibly busy...work, sports, birthday parties, class trips. Seeds of Caring offers us an opportunity take pause on all of these tasks and look at the bigger picture. Through events such as packing lunches for the homeless, making activity kits for gravely ill children, singing with the elderly, and gathering supplies for women who are trying to get back on their feet -- they are learning. There literally is no better opportunity for our kids to see the big picture and get "the feels.” I sincerely believe that these two little souls are changing. I believe with all that I have that Seeds of Caring is changing the trajectory for how they will move forward in this world as kinder, more thoughtful, compassionate humans.”
Seeds of Caring empowers children to create a kinder community with their hearts, hands, and minds. Follow Seeds of Caring on Facebook for more ideas and visit its calendar to register for upcoming events.
