What is your business? When did you start it?
Black Velvet Desserts, LLC started off as a gourmet dessert catering company in May 2017. We operate out of the 1400 Food Lab - a community commercial kitchen. We cater all sorts of events and offer a high-end menu of desserts such as tarts, eclairs, and unique "out-of-the-box" flavors. Since then, we have transformed into a social enterprise that focuses on offering elevated experiences so that we can elevate the lives of victims of Human Trafficking.
What inspired/encouraged you to start your business?
I've always wanted to own my own business and utilize it to do some sort of social good. So, I took a leap of faith after examining the things I was good at and ran with it. My heart breaks for those who suffer from abuse or have been victimized by human trafficking. God has laid it on my heart to take action and do something about it. With Black Velvet, I'm able to use my gifts to help others know that, even though life throws us all kinds of ingredients, we can use it to create something beautiful, worthy and valuable.

What are your favorite things about Black Velvet Desserts?
I love that I am always creating! I have WONDERFUL clients who trust me to create something new and exotic for their special day. I'm constantly learning new techniques and methods - which excites the nerd in me! I also love being my own boss and having the ability to prioritize my family and be present as a mom and wife.
What do you do for fun?
I am a mom of 2 boys who are very active in sports and my husband also coaches. So, I'm usually always at practice or a game watching my boys play! We also love going camping and doing anything outside. However, I enjoy being at home in my pj's watching the sun go down with a glass of wine.
What can we do to support your business in the community?
My main goal is to employ and mentor/coach survivors of human trafficking. My other goals include opening up my own brick and mortar so that I can offer stable employment as well as host more awareness and benefit events. By being a loyal client, spreading the word, and helping me raise awareness, you will enable this business to grow and reach its goals! Be sure to follow me on Facebook and Instagram (@bvdesserts) to learn more about where I'll be and how you can support Black Velvet Desserts!
