These creative, and adorably yummy haunted houses are a great idea and a BIG hit with kids of all ages! We had a blast getting all the fun ingredients we could find, and can't wait to put ours together this weekend!

Materials

  • serrated knife
  • Plastic baggie

Ingredients

  • 6 pop tarts
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 teaspoons water
  • Halloween candy (pumpkins, ghosts, dots, M&Ms, etc.)

The best way to go about this is to place 6 poptarts on a cutting board and begin cutting the layout of the house. Take two poptarts and set them vertically. Make a triangle roof, by cutting from the top middle out to the side at an angle. You can then take 2 more poptarts, and cut them to match the height where the roof begins (as pictured). You can also try to stand them on their side, although it is more difficult to balance the poptart on the edging itself. The remaining two pieces you can leave uncut- they will be used for the roof!

You should now have two roof pieces (un-cut), 2 house shaped pieces, and 2 wall peces. Next, combine the powdered sugar and water by adding 1/2 teaspoon at a time until desired consistency is achieved (2 1/2 teaspoons is the recommended amount). You want the icing to be the consistency of craft glue. Add food coloring to give it a creative spin all your own! Spoon icing into a ziploc bag and cut the tip off. Use it to glue the 4 walls together with icing and hold the pieces in place for a minute or so. Repeat the process for the roof as well.
Let the houses completely stand at least 30 minutes before you begin decorating. If making these with littler kids, we recommend you try to assemble them the day before to allow pop tarts to harden. This makes them sturdier for decorating.

Take the icing and apply it directly to the house, or dip your decorative candies into it and add them accordingly! To add heavier candies to the houses, like M&Ms, add a line of icing to the house and let the icing stand for a couple of minutes before placing candy on it. This will allow the icing to dry a little and become tacky. This is a fun activity to get creative, and make it all your own! Spooky, elegant, there's no right or wrong design!!
