I started my journey of becoming an ingredient detective approximately 7 years ago after a friend recommended I read the book “Not Just A Pretty Face” by Stacy Malkan. As a Registered Nurse and Licensed Massage Therapist, I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about health and wellness. I was trying to eat organic as much as possible and was even buying natural products for my families. I thought I was “doing ok”. Little did I know how much my life was about to change.Thanks to that same friend who shared that book with me, she also shared a business opportunity that has become one of the most meaningful and rewarding jobs I have ever had. I became a Consultant for a Company whose mission is in the business of doing good — for people, for the environment, and for the next generation. What started as one family’s dream for a world with safe, non-toxic products, is today carried forth by our community of Pure Haven Essentials Independent Consultants. Just as most people have learned to read labels on the food they eat, we think it’s equally important to become an ingredient detectives when choosing personal care and home products. Because it’s not only what you put IN your body, but what you put ON your body that can affect your health. What I have experienced is that most people have no idea that they are being exposed to several harmful chemicals daily. The cosmetic industry, and that includes everything you use on your body from head to toe, not just makeup, is not regulated in the United States. Many people believe that the FDA regulates safety of the Cosmetic Industry. “The FDA has no authority to require companies to test cosmetics products for safety. The agency does not review or approve the majority of products or ingredients before they go on the market. Products labeled “organic” or “natural” can contain petrochemicals, and those certified as organic can contain as little as 10 percent organic ingredients by weight or volume (Certech 2008).” (EWG 2016) This is my personal “WHY” I decided to become a Pure Haven Essentials Consultant, to empower people with the information that can help them know whether the products they are using, are truly safe!! Once I replaced my nursing income, I quit my job and work my home based business with the freedom of making my own schedule and the satisfaction that I am still helping people.
As I mentioned, I thought I was doing ok with my natural products. I was totally shocked to find that many of the products I thought were safe, had endocrine disruptors, carcinogens and even neurotoxins in them. Take the word FRAGRANCE for example, when you see this word in the ingredients list on your product, it is a “catch all” word that manufacturers legally use to hide hundreds of ingredients and call it “trade secret”. So you really don’t know what you are being exposed to. More than 75% of products with “fragrance” are legally hiding phthalates (THAL-ates). Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors, and are linked to birth defects, breast cancer, diabetes, obesity, autism and ADHD in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. (Campaign for Safe Cosmetics-2002) This particular chemical is actually banned from use in personal care products, in several other countries including the European Union.
