Charity Newsies Announces Application Schedule

Summer Schedule Ensures More Students Have New School Clothes for the First Day of Classes

June 21, 2016
Although the school year just ended, Charity Newsies, the organization that has provided children with new school clothes since 1907, is gearing up for the next school year by filling its warehouse with new pants, shirts, coats and school uniform essentials and taking applications at select Columbus Metropolitan Library branches beginning in July.
Charity Newsies outfits students enrolled in public, parochial, charter and vocational schools throughout Franklin County.
Taking applications so early in the summer is a change that Charity Newsies made in 2015.
“Since most of the schools in central Ohio begin classes in August, we recognized that in order for more students to receive their new school clothes/uniforms and shoes before the first day of classes, we needed to take applications earlier than in previous years,” said Stephen Chandler, President for Charity Newsies.
According to Chandler, applications taken earlier in the summer allow for them to be processed so that clothing appointments (when students visit the Charity Newsies showroom to select their new clothes) can be scheduled as soon as the first week of August.
Eligibility and application requirements:
• Application must be completed by a parent or legal guardian
• Each applicant must live in Franklin County;
• Verified attendance at a Franklin County K-12 school (public, private, charter or parochial); and
• A valid photo ID, social security card and proof of income (a recent pay stub or Human Services Benefit summary)

Upon successful completion of the application, each child will receive a home visit (new applicants and previous clients who have moved since last year), and a scheduled clothing appointment at Charity Newsies headquarters to select pants, shirts, socks, undergarments and coat and will receive a $25 voucher for Payless shoes.
Background:
The lack of proper clothing is a main reason why children miss school.  New clothes help improve self-esteem, and self-esteem helps children do better at school.  Charity Newsies has worked to empower children since 1907. Our mission is that no child shall be kept out of school for lack of adequate clothing. 100 percent of financial donations help purchase new clothing. Since 1907, Charity Newsies have helped clothe more than 500,000 children in Columbus and Franklin County.
